Organic farming: First retailer to sell 100% organic French bread in its stores
Within the framework of its "Carrefour 2022" transformation plan that Alexandre Bompard presented on 23 January, Carrefour has set itself the target of becoming the global leader of the food transition for everyone. Its aim is to ensure that all consumers have access to high-quality food at affordable prices, wherever they are. This will involve expanding its organic range, the target being €5 billion generated by sales of organic products by 2022. To do this, the retailer is entering into partnerships upstream of the sector as a means of guaranteeing and securing its supplies.
Carrefour has signed two three-year contract agreements with companies operating in France's greater western organic flour sector, covering a total volume of more than 1200 tonnes: three cooperatives (Agribio Union, Biograin and Cavac), a grain mill (the Moulin Suire) and a processor (Biofournil). The aim is to guarantee all Carrefour customers bread made with 100% organic French flour starting in March 2018, at all store formats.
Four types of organic bread are covered by this pledge: the boule bio organic loaf, the baguette, wholemeal bread and multigrain loaf.
